Skincare routines are an essential part of maintaining healthy skin. However, finding the perfect routine for your skin type can be tricky.
There are many different types of skin, each with its own needs. Some people have oily skin while others have dry skin. Finding the right skincare routine for your skin type is key to keeping your skin looking its best.
In this article, I will go over the different types of skin and how to find the best skincare routine for each type.
The first step in figuring out what kind of skincare routine you need is determining which skin type you fall into. There are four main categories that describe a person’s skin type: normal/dry, combination, oily, or sensitive.
Oily or combination skin tends to produce more oil than other types of skin. This means that it’s important to use a moisturizer every day in order to keep excess oils from clogging pores. It also helps if you exfoliate regularly as well because dead cells tend to trap extra sebum which causes breakouts. If you don’t exfoliate enough, then bacteria build up on top of your skin causing acne.
Dry skin has very little natural moisture so using products like lotions and creams won’t work too well. Instead, focus on hydrating your face by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. You should also apply a good quality facial mask once per week to help hydrate your skin.
Normal skin doesn’t need much care at all. Just make sure to wash your face twice daily and avoid touching your eyes. Avoid harsh cleansers and scrubs since they may irritate sensitive skin. Use gentle toner instead.
Sensitive skin often reacts badly to certain ingredients found in most commercial cosmetics. For example, some shampoos contain chemicals called sulfates which strip away the protective layer of hair follicles leaving them vulnerable to damage. Other common culprits include alcohol-based preservatives such as parabens.

There’s no one right way to create a skincare routine but there are some common steps in most skin care routines: cleansing, toning/exfoliating, moisturizing, eye care, sunscreen application, makeup removal, etc.
These steps will vary depending on the type of product being applied. For example, if you have an oil-based cleanser then you’ll need to exfoliate before applying any other product. If you use a gel-based cleanser, you don’t need to exfoliate prior to applying anything else. The best thing is to experiment until you find the method that works best for you!
Cleaning Normal/Combo Skin
Cleanse your face twice a day using an oil-free cleanser that won’t clog the pores. Use gentle exfoliating scrubs once a week if needed. If you’re prone to acne breakouts, avoid cleansing wipes because they can irritate your skin.
Use a moisturizer every morning and night for extra hydration. Apply sunscreen daily even on cloudy days when you don’t need protection from UV rays.
Cleaning Dry Skin
If your skin feels tight when you apply lotion or cream, chances are good that you need more moisture on top of what’s already there. Use an oil-free moisturizer instead of lotions or creams. Moisturizers can be found in drugstores, department stores, supermarkets, and beauty supply shops. They’re usually sold as liquids but sometimes come in tubes or jars.
Cleaning Oily Skin
If you’re prone to breakouts, start by washing your face twice daily using an oil-free moisturizer instead of cleansing wipes. You should also avoid harsh soaps because they strip away moisture. Instead, choose mild cleansers made specifically for combination skin. They contain less fragrance than regular shampoos and are formulated without any drying agents. Use them as often as needed to keep your skin clean but not too wet.
Cleaning Sensitive Skin
If you’re using any cosmetics on your sensitive skin, test them first before applying them all over your face. Some people are allergic to certain chemicals used in beauty products. Also, if you wear glasses, check their lenses to see whether they contain nickel. Nickel allergies cause redness around the eyes.
Moisture helps prevent wrinkles by keeping fine lines smooth. Use moisturizer every day. Choose one that’s lightweight so it won’t clog up your pores. Look for something without mineral oil, petrolatum, parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, synthetic preservatives, artificial colors, or animal testing.
Put on Sunscreen
Sun exposure causes wrinkles, age spots, freckles, sunburns, and premature aging. Use sunscreen daily to protect against these problems. Look for broad-spectrum SPF 30+ protection. Choose a lotion rather than cream, since they absorb better into your skin. Reapply often throughout the day if you spend time outdoors.
A toner is used after cleansing to balance pH levels and refresh your skin. It works best at night, just like a facial mask. The key difference between a toner and a mask is that toner doesn’t leave behind residue. If you have oily skin, use a gentle formula designed for dry skin. For normal to dry skin types, look for a product containing salicylic acid. Salicylic acid exfoliates dead skin cells while helping reduce acne flare-ups
At night, you may also choose to skip the treatment step altogether. Instead, focus on repairing damaged skin cells with serums and masks. Serum formulas contain concentrated amounts of vitamins A C E and antioxidants that help repair and protect against future signs of aging.
Masks work similarly, but they typically include clay minerals that draw impurities out of the skin. Both treatments are great options for evening routines, especially when paired with a serum.
When to change your skincare routine
As we get older our bodies begin to produce fewer collagen fibers which lead to sagging skin. This means that even though we might feel younger inside, our outer appearance will show signs of aging sooner than expected. However, this does not mean that you cannot fight back! There are many ways to combat the effects of aging including:

Look for this label when shopping for facial cleansers: “Non-comedogenic.” It indicates that the product won’t block pores or irritate sensitive skin.
What Does Non-Comedogenic Mean Exactly?
Noncomedogenic means nonirritating—and this can mean different things to different people. Some women find certain brands irritating while others don’t. If you’re prone to breakouts, choose one that contains salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or retinol. These acids help reduce inflammation and prevent future outbreaks by killing bacteria and unclogging pores.
If you prefer gentle formulas, opt for ones containing lactic acid, witch hazel, or aloe vera. Lactic acid helps remove dirt from the surface of the skin without stripping it away. Witch hazel soothes irritated areas and reduces redness. Aloe vera calms irritation caused by other ingredients in your face wash.
If you want something more potent, try an alpha hydroxy acid like glycolic acid. Glycolic acid removes excess oil and debris from the top layer of skin, leaving it smooth and glowing.
